So I recently got bit by the Barbie collecting bug, and have slowly been acquiring Silkstone dolls. I appreciate these are valuable, however I don't want them to sit in a box in storage or a cupboard. They are works of art and I'd like to display them, albeit in their open boxes, as opposed to removing them and placing them on stands. 

I've been talking to a couple of collectors and been told not to have anything facing direct sun. I have a North facing room and am thinking of putting a display cabinet in it for my dolls. It would not be facing any windows directly either - however being Los Angeles, there is always a lot of natural light in the room. Great generally, but perhaps not so great for collectibles.

I have a few questions for the seasoned collectors among you - any recommendations on cabinets, UV material, and or if I should line the shelves ahead of displaying the boxes in them? Any advice, tips or recommendations most welcome.

I want the whole set...😭😭😭

I'm not sure if it's just the most recent drops or everything in general. But I'm getting tired of paying for a subscription, being an active part of a fan community, and staying up past midnight on work nights to collect dolls that are gone within minutes. I'm sorry, but it's hard to believe that a company worth millions of dollars can't stop bots someone paid less than a dollar each for. Everything is resold a rate so fast I'm beginning to contemplate whether or not employees or companies themselves are in on the reselling.

Some people are saying it's a Hot Wheel collaboration but we're just speculating. It's in less than 2 days so it would be nice if you'd clarify it, since it can also affect other brands.

But I generally think something Mattel is going to end up behind with is how this new cinematic universe introduces stories and characters and relationships through dialogue and cameos. It's a universe with a LOT happening off screen.

Creature Commandos and the Hall of Justice mural in the Superman film introduced major characters related to Superman, Flash, and Batman. We can infer that Bloodsport from The Suicide Squad has fought this Superman because of Peacemaker.

So if you're doing, say, a Superman cinematic toyline between films, you probably want Bloodsport in that. He's an offscreen Superman foe. You'll need to keep an eye on Jimmy Olsen's TV show because it's entirely reasonable that Talia al Ghul or Gorilla Grodd or Conduit or General Zod could debut in live action there.

They could not only debut there but it's probable they would debut as someone Superman or Green Lantern have an extensive history with.

This gets into toy play patterns because if the toys are designed to tell original stories with, for kids or collectors, there's probably a special emphasis that should be put on pairing toys of characters who have never appeared together but have a backstory of interacting.

I think to some extent a few toylines have grappled with this kind of thing. There are subsets of G.I. Joe or Transformers or Marvel that it's rewarding to pair who have never met in any media. I think McFarlane's DC may be the first DC figure line WEIRD enough to do that with DC, where you can pair stuff like Earth-2 Robin with Red Hood (who I think technically met very briefly and obscurely when Jason was Robin) or Shining Knight with Dark Knights of Steel Batman or Kal-L and Val-Zod.

But I think to get the most out of what DC is doing, something like Superman or Batman toys may need to be ready to release toys as connected that never connect onscreen. There may well be Batman villains who regularly fight Batman, referenced both in Batman films in the future and elsewhere, who never share a screen. The Riddler could well only appear in Flash and Green Lantern projects REFERENCING fights with Batman that Batman films also mention without the actors ever filming together.

And yet, contrary to how licensing with DC has typically worked, a Riddler who only appears in Green Lantern as a Batman villain should probably be marketed in a BATMAN toyline rather than one tied to where he appeared, to properly sell Gunn's approach.

I have heard many times that DC and WB typically wanted toys and merch to help sell specific graphic novels or films but Gunn's approach largely hinges on the idea of there being nonexistent, implied projects going on that we don't see. If Riddler shows up in Green Lantern as in my hypothetical, it's selling the idea that there's Batman movies going on constantly offscreen that we have to imagine.

That's actually great for toys but I can't imagine Mattel is prepared to approach things that way and honestly the WB licensing rep may not be either... and you'll both be caught flat footed when James Gunn wants to know why there's no Jimmy Olsen Turtle Boy vs. Metallo figure in an interview because I don't think he'd expect you to NOT just do that in a Superman toyline, even if it's from a different project you're not focused on.
