Is this true that Mattel has made a Barbie in a Burka which I saw on the news this morning? If this is true, this is not good for Mattel to be contributing to the oppression of women. Because that is what the Burka does to women that have to wear it.

This week has been a very slippery slope for women. First the controvery over mammograms, then the unnecessary pap smears and now the grand fanale Berkas for women. We've been set back 200 years with this doll. How much more submissive do women have to be before we stand up and put a stop to these ludicrous actions? No-No!

Barbie is supposed to be whatever we want her to be. How can we slam what is the traditional Islamic dress. The Burk-ha may not be normal to you but if you don't understand it don't make negative comments on it. You don't know who is out there who may find your comments offensive. Although Mattel did not create this doll they back up the Italian designer because they respect other cultures & religions. To me, tattoo's are bad, but hey, there is a tattooed barbie out there and this is the first time you see me write something negative on it. To each his own. Don't Know

I think it is wonderful that this doll is here now, it is beautiful to represent all women of the world.

I personally won't CA this topic but I do foresee it being deleted.

I am sorry you do not agree but women are being murdered for refusing to wear the burka and it is a representation of oppression.

I think this is a very slippery slope that we don't really want to get on. I think it would behoove us to remember that to many of my feminist brethren, Barbie herself is a symbol of oppression.

Mattel isn't making them....they are part of a collection being auctioned off for Save the Children...according to a news article I just read.

There are social, cultural norms & values which may vary from our own, which can easily be taken out of content and context. It is not my place to make judgment calls about what is right or wrong for another, only how I make the best choices for myself and my family.

I do not see an issue with a Barbie in a Burka or a Bikini, because I have a deep love for the 11.5" inch doll; she's worn many fashions through the years. There are those who live by different social and cultural standards, of which some have dress codes. I respect such differences though my own views and opinions differ.

I think when bringing up a topic like this, a link to the news story would be appreciated. There are an amazing number of false or misrepresented stories that fly about the internet every day (gotta love instant news, whether it is truly news or not is another issue)

Not all women who wear the burka are oppressed & unless someone knows every single detail about the cultures who wear the burka, I have an issue with the statement "that is what the Burka does to women that have to wear it."

MANY people feel that Barbie is demeaning to women & that her high heeled feet & her breasts are a sign of oppression.

Women are being murdered for a variety of reasons in every country of the world, INCLUDING the USA. Unfortunately, many countries & cultures, including the USA, still feel that women are second class citizens.

Very well said!!

Collect what you love & you will love your collection.

Bigotry wrapped in religion is still bigotry.

In my post above I did link the article....I had deleted it but re-attached it now.

I think the only reason that Mattel may have sanctioned the auction is because it involves the "Save the Children" charity. Then again we just have the articles word for it that it is Mattel sanctioned. You know how sometimes things get reported that aren't entirely true.
