Guest ILSALUND1572382530 Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Hello- I am in need of any info. about a Star Trek Barbie. My boyfriend was shown a Barbie that was dressed in the giftset uniform but it was in the color of Kirk uniform. He was told it was rare and not a lot was made, it is boxed with Mattel on the box! I thought there was only a giftset made, was there a seperate Barbie made and if so how was she sold? Any info. would be great! Thanks, *Amanda*
Guest BCLouE1572382628 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 There was a Barbie and Ken Star Trek giftset done in 1996 (you can see it here).

Thank you for the link, BCLouE; I had been having some trouble getting them into My Collection! (Duh, I could have just typed "Star Trek," I finally found out ) I have this one, Amanda--I actually received it as a gift it when it first came out, 1996. The Giftset has managed to survive about 4 moves, NRFB, no shelfwear, and is GORGEOUS, IMHO! Barbie and Ken (Y. Janice Rand and Captain Kirk) look very much like themselves; that is, Barbie and Ken--to me. This is not so much the case with the X-Files Gift Set (type in "X Files" in the search for dolls--while in the Showcase--that worked for me, it comes right up). IMHO, they look at bit more like the Characters Scully and Mulder than Barbie and Ken, again, to me. I still love the set I have; even if it does have the dreaded Shelf Wear (came that way). I'm a HUGE fan of both shows, and I was delighted when they made these Giftsets Thank you again BCLouE for your response and the great link, and Mattel for making these super sets! (I can see them right now in this room, woohoo ) Hope you find the Star Trek one if your friend is looking for it, Amanda--Good Luck. Have a Great Day,
JUDYRAE Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 I think what Amanda was trying to find was if Mattel had done a single Barbie in a Star Trek costume, other than the Barbie/Ken giftset. Amanda, I think that if your boyfriend's friend can't/won't produce a picture that you could show to the collectors here on the board, I would be skeptical about what he is trying to sell. There are A LOT of scammers in the collectibles world, whether it is Barbie, baseball cards or anything else. My personal thoughts are these: (a)someone took a Barbie, made a Star Trek costume & is trying to pass it off as a genuine Mattel product, instead of a home-made redress. (b) This doll is a OOAK doll made by an artist, in which case, the seller should have some kind of documentation as to who made it, either a COA, a photo, etc. A lot of doll artists do wonderful pop culture dolls, Matt Sutton is the first one who comes to my mind. His Tippi Hedren dolls from "The Birds" are amazing. I have been a Barbie collector for a long time & have been on the Barbie internet boards since the old Pink Chat days in 1997. If Mattel had done a Star Trek Barbie (other than the giftset) someone would have posted it & no one I know, including some rabid Star Trek collectors have ever heard of a Star Trek Barbie officially done by Mattel. Collect what you love & you will love your collection. Bigotry wrapped in religion is still bigotry.
Guest mccelt2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Omigosh, Judyrae! Those are all excellent points--not to mention that I just re-read Amanda's post...; clearly I didn't get it. Sorry Amanda! 110% + Agreement; as a long-time "Buyer" in other places--utterly *Buyer Beware* when no proof, or even a gosh darned picture can be produced. That makes no sense at all. I will not buy something "rare" or "VHTF," and so on, if there is no picture involved--not a chance. Thank you, Judyrae, for pointing these things out! Humbly Yours, Billie-Lee
JUDYRAE Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 No problem, I hate the thought of anyone getting scammed. A friend of mine at work has an aunt who collects Barbies. She paid way, way too much for a #1 Silkstone because the seller claimed the doll was rare because the word genuine is misspelled. ALL of the #1 Lingerie, #2 Lingerie & Delphine boxes have the word genuine misspelled on them. A truly rare #1, #2 or Delphine doll would have the word genuine spelled properly. Collect what you love & you will love your collection. Bigotry wrapped in religion is still bigotry.
