Guest Glynis60 Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I recently bought "Le Nouveau Theatre De La Mode Barbie by Billy Boy. She had no black nail polish on and no sign even of nails. Monday I saw an ad in ebay for an "Error Barbie" who also had no black nail polish on selling for $2,000. What is the story on these? Are the ones without nail polish a mistake and therefor worth something? and how can we tell if someone didn't just clean the nail polish off? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Glynis
JUDYRAE Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I would be very suspicious of "error Barbie", especially on ebay. Was your doll NRFB or deboxed? If she is deboxed, I woudl guess that she has had her nail polish removed, but I don't know if there is any way to tell for sure. I couldn't find the Billy Boy Barbies in the showcase here at Barbie Collector, but someone will be able to give you a definite answer. Being "worth something" is all in a person's perspective. From my personal perspective, the only doll that MIGHT possibly be worth $2000.00 would be a OOAK doll. The Billy Boy dolls would certainly NOT be worth that kind of money to me. Collect what you love & you will love your collection. Bigotry wrapped in religion is still bigotry.
KATHIEC Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Was the supposed error just listed for $2000 or did someone really pay that? Lots of people ask ridiculous prices for dolls on eBay -- it doesn't mean they get them. As Judy says, sellers on eBay have been trying to make a buck off Mattel "errors" since the 35th anniversary doll in 1994. In reality, I've never seen any of the so-called "errors" affect a doll's value (except for the occasional poor sucker who bought one thinking it was going to be worth even more in the future). As to the question of nail polish, I would suspect the polish had either worn off or been removed. It's also possible that a doll could miss the nail-painting step on the production line.
Guest shortyfriends1572399552 Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I also have that doll. I have owned her since 1987 or 1988. She alo does not have nail polish. I saw that same ebay ad the other day as well.
Guest BUSTERBLUESUN Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 the doll originally came with no nail polish...i think billyboy did a doll signing and also painted the nails black, so the only ones that are painted are the ones he did at that time. it's in one of those barbie reference books, i think micheal augustyniak's???
Guest BUSTERBLUESUN Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 i had this doll at one time, the one with nails painted black and it was signed by billyboy, but i ended up selling her on ebay. i can say i've never seen one listed for the above price, painted or not.
Guest BUSTERBLUESUN Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 from the collector's encyclopedia of barbie doll collector editions: "these dolls are individually numbered in an edition of 10,000. five hundred of the dolls had black nail polish and were personally autographed by billy boy."

The doll had been out of the box a while which is why I thought the nail polish might have been removed. Black nail polish in the 80's was somewhat radical after all. Now I see it could have worn off too. Thanks for the advice, $2000 is not worth it.

That makes sense. The box, although it has his signature does not have his autograph. Thanks for checking, (*:*) Glynis

I'm going to just paint her nails black myself as that was one of the things that appealed to me in the first place. The picture on the box of her waving makes her look like she is standing on a balcony about to sing "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" LOL She's a lovely doll.
