Guest geryjo Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I asked Mattel the other day how many Ekaterina dolls are being produced and the woman on the phone said she had no idea. But i just saw on Ebay someone selling a preorder and they listed the run as 3,000. Any way to verify this?
Auntievern Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 There are no more than 3000 of these dolls being made. http://www.barbiecollector.com/news/2011-barbie-fan-club-bigger-bolder-better -- Veronica / AuntieVern ~ Member Moderator

KATHIEC Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 Each member is allowed only one each. There's nothing that says a member has to keep their doll if they purchase one. Many members buy club dolls for resale. What members are not allowed to do it sell club dolls that they don't have in hand, and I'm sure Mattel is working to shut the pre-sale auctions down.

VIRGINIAHAMAOL.COM Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I JUST RECEIVED MY EKATERINA BARBIE TODAY AND LET ME TELL YOU---I WAS HUGELY DISAPPOINTED! THE BROCADE OUTFIT MINE IS WEARING DOESN'T COME CLOSE TO THE BEAUTIFUL BROCADE OUTFIT IN THE PHOTOS OF HER---THAT BROCADE IS TRULY GORGEOUS AND SUMPTUOUS. THE BROCADE OUTFIT MY EKATERINA IS WEARING BEARS NO RESEMBLANCE TO THE GORGEOUS BROCADE IN THE PHOTOS. THE BROCADE OUTFIT MINE IS WEARING IS ONE OF THE UGLIEST, DULLEST BROCADES I HAVE EVER SEEN---NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE ONE IN THE PHOTOS! THE MAKEUP ON MY DOLL ISN'T NEARLY AS BEAUTIFUL AS WELL. I HAVE TO SAY, IT IS RARE THAT MATTEL DOESN'T DELIVER, BUT THIS TIME THEY FAILED MISERABLY! ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I JOIN THE CLUB IS SO THAT I HAVE ACCESS TO BUYING THESE CLUB DOLLS, AS THEY ARE GENERALLY EVERY BIT AS BEAUTIFUL IN REAL LIFE AS THEY ARE IN THE PHOTOS. BUT THIS TIME THEY DIDN'T EVEN COME CLOSE! I WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE I JOIN THE CLUB NEXT YEAR! I WILL KEEP THE DOLL AS SHE IS SUCH A LIMITED EDITION, BUT I WILL PROBABLY REPAINT HER MYSELF AND THE OUTFIT WAS DEFINITELY NOT WHAT I BARGAINED FOR. I HOPE THE REST OF YOU ENJOY YOURS BECUASE I SURE DIDN'T. VERY DISHEARTENING, TO SAY THE LEAST!
SHEREEM Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 We're sorry you are disappointed in your Ekaterina. I happen to love mine and have seen a very positive response to her on the boards from others who have received her! You can always return any product within 30 days of purchase for a full refund. You can contact Customer Service if you'd like them to assist with a return. (a request to please type in upper and lower case when you post, as it is taken as 'yelling' to type in all CAPS plus it's hard on the eyes of some members)

Posted by virginiaham@aol.com I do understand that your wern't to happy with the final product, and yes there were a few times I was a little surprised with the final product but one thing i say to keep in mind is, on every page in the shop when your looking at a barbie to purchase, it always says in the right side of the page that doll colours and style can be different from actual product. I sometimes don't expect too much for a barbie when i order on and when i finally get it i'm pleasantly surprised and happy. Just remember its just like anything that is promoted, products are enhanced and made to look perfect in ad's not just barbie but all companies out there.

Posted by ari_ron I understand what you are saying, believe me I do, and I am fully aware of the disclaimer on each page of the catalogue stating that the doll in the photo may vary from doll in actual production run. That being said, here is what I don't understand: why a company, like Mattel, creates a prototype of a doll and photographs it, advertises it, promotes it and then completely changes the main fabric of the outfit the prototype is dressed in---this makes no sense to me. If the fabric to be used in the final product offered to the consumer is not what is used for the prototype then why does a company even waste their time photographing the doll ? Wouldn't a drawing be just as effective? And why waste your time making a prototype doll using material that would NOT be available when the company actually starts making the dolls that are going to be the dolls for sale? Did the company only buy enough material to make the prototype doll and that's that---what a stupid idea that would be. To me this practice of offering goods for sale that in the end don't match the description or photos of what you thought you were going to be buying is called the old "bait and switch"---a practice that is becoming more and more prevalent in our society, much to the disappointment of many consumers. It's like going to an appliance store to buy a new TV that is being advertised and then when you arrive at the store the retailer tells you that they don't have "that particular" TV (i.e. the one that they were advertising) but that they have "another" model that they would like to sell you. When I ordered the Ekaterina Barbie I did so because I thought I would be receiving a doll that was similar to the doll shown in the phtos in the catalogue---what I got was a far cry from what I thought I would be getting, that's all I am saying. I am glad alot of you "fans" out there love yours and think she is gorgeous---I thought the photos of the doll in the cataloge were indeed gorgeous and that's why I ordered her. But the doll I got from Mattel was NOT gorgeous and not what I thought I would be receiving---and that's why I sent her back. So the good news is---someone else out there will have access to one of these dolls---I hope you enjoy her because I sure did not. I hope and pray that the Mila doll I ordered looks like the doll in the phtotos or she will be going back as well.
SHEREEM Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 The prototype doll is just that, a prototype. When the design team makes the 'one off' prototype doll, they may have a particular fabric, hairstyle, etc. in mind. But when it comes to production actually duplicating it, many times minor changes must be made, for a myriad of reasons. There is no 'bait and switch' going on ~ as mentioned there is a disclaimer with the prototype photos. I have both the Mattel prototype and the production version of Cleopatra. While there are similarities, there are also some differences. The black/green skirt fabric is slightly different in color and design, the face mold is different and face paint is different. Collectors want photos of dolls as early as possible. That means showing photos of the prototype. Because it is known that prototypes often vary from the actual production doll, some collectors do wait for IRL photos to be posted on the boards here to then make their purchasing decision. We hope you'll take some time to cruise around the forums and learn more about the prototype and production processes and to also take in the beautiful dolls in the Photo Forum.
