You Chose It, We’re Making It: RLC Exclusive sELECTIONs 1972 Nissan Skyline H/T 2000GT-R

By Allen Voivod

Earlier this year, we opened up a second sELECTIONs opportunity for members to vote on a car we’d make exclusively for them. We gave you the choice of cruising or racing, and you put the pedal to the metal, voting for the 1972 Nissan Skyline H/T 2000GT-R. You’ll have an exclusive window to pre-order as many of them as you want, from October 31, 2023 at 9 AM PT until November 13, 2023 at 9 PM PT.

Not an RLC member? You can add a membership to your cart with the car and get both at once. Learn more about RLC benefits here

“As you may know, this casting started life in the mainline and we brought it into the RLC line by retooling it with more detail, more parts, and giving it an opening engine hood feature,” says designer Brendon Vetuskey. “However, the engine hood on this car is hinged in the front. And while a forward-opening hood in 1:64 diecast is nothing new, the way we did it is, and it’s what I’m most proud about with this casting.”

That was in 2021, when the first premium version of the casting was offered to RLC members. It’s only been offered a few times since, but clearly Hot Wheels fans can’t get enough of it. So, how does this updated hinge mechanism work? “We used a piece of bent metal wire to allow us a tighter opening angle that is more realistic to the real car operation and positions the engine hood in a closer to original spot per the real car when opened,” Brendon explains. “It also gave us back more space inside the engine bay for engine detail itself. Had we just used a diecast hinge, the result would not be nearly as good.”

Members also chose a very stylish Spectraflame dark purple for the paint, and we turned it over to graphic designer Steve Vandervate to customize it even further. “This deco is inspired, to put it lightly, by the famous Nissan Motorsports ‘Hakosuka’ Skyline that ran in the Grand Champion Series in Japan,” Steve says. “Ours uses #2 since this is sELECTIONs #2, and replaces the original ‘PMCS’ with ‘RLC’ on the rear quarter.” (PMCS stands for Prince Motorist Club Sports, honoring the original manufacturer of the Skyline, before it merged into Nissan Motor Company.)

Because this is a made-to-order item, it may take a while to reach your doorstep, but that’ll give you plenty of time to pick the perfect space to display it. You only have about two weeks to place your pre-orders, though, so be sure to reserve your 1972 Nissan Skyline H/T 2000GT-R before November 13, 2023 at 9 PM PT.

I love the choice of car and color but the livery is a miss for my personal taste. A nice full spectraflame purple with the black flares (or carbon fiber designed flares) would have been of more interest to myself. I can see the appeal of the cream livery though!
