A New Sparkle: Barbie Pink Collection Doll 2

By Allen Voivod

Barbie doll may have debuted in a black-and-white swimsuit in 1959, but there's one color with which she'll forever be associated: Pink! And a very specific shade of pink - PANTONE 219 C, to be precise.

But why would a fashion icon and trendsetter like Barbie ever limit herself to just one shade of her signature color? That's part of what's driving Senior Director of Barbie Design Robert Best to play with the palette in his latest series for Barbie, The Pink Collection! It's a bold celebration of classic Barbie glamour, notably influenced by on-trend fashions, and continues this season with Barbie Pink Collection Doll 2

She picks up the narrative that began with Barbie Pink Collection Doll - Pink Premiere earlier this year, and challenges that previous convention by adding a certain sparkle to the style. Together, the two make a fierce statement – that the hottest haute couture looks are born from daring decisions.

When we asked Robert about his design choices and inspirations, what we discovered is that he takes a very holistic approach to his work. "The color of the dress will go a long way in determining things like the color of the makeup," he explains by way of example. "Similarly, the jewelry design works as a compliment to the total look. A successful design combines all these elements together harmoniously."

As for exploring the possibilities that pink has to offer, Robert says, "I opted for a darker pink color to distinguish [this doll] from the first doll. The silhouette is also more restrained, with a body-hugging bodice and dramatic ruffled flourishes." But it wasn't all about the pink this time around. "I wanted to mix up the idea of just head-to-toe pink," he adds, "so I incorporated a sparkly element by way of the silvery micro sequins on the bodice and a very glam suite of silver and rhinestone jewelry."

Featuring a Silkstone doll body, Barbie Pink Collection Doll 2 wears a stunning asymmetrical look featuring a double-tiered, ruffle satin gown. The gown’s ruched bodice is cinched with a brooch and sparkles with silvery micro sequin details. Dazzling drop earrings complement her side-swept hairstyle, and silver glitter stiletto heels and opera-length gloves are elegant finishing touches.

To present her in her best light, we turned to two experts in their fields: set designer Lars Auvinen and photographer Paul Jordan. "We really wanted to celebrate the color 'Pink' with these fashion dolls," Paul says. "Early on, Robert, Lars, and I met to discussed the direction for this line. We all agreed that the [photo set] space didn't need to be literal. Instead, we gravitated towards it celebrating  the color pink. We wanted an elevated and modern feeling of couture . Lars, who designed the set, came up with the idea of layers of pink on pink with a high gloss feel. Out of that design concept, and with the use of reflective materials and colored plexiglass he delivered a set that embodies a lux feeling of pink couture!"

But they're not just thinking about this doll as their designing these photos shoots! Lars adds, "We kept the set design similar to the first doll. Our intention is to have a cohesive group of shots over the duration of the doll line. Our initial discussions and directions were to keep a clean, modern, transparent, reflective nature to all the shoots. The dolls have very vibrant colors, and the sets need to complement those colors."

And when she arrives in your collection, it will be in the same kind of doll box as with the previous doll in the collection. It's a modern design, simple yet elevated, from Key Lead Packaging Designer Vicky Gevorkyan. "It’s really about designing around the doll to make her look her best, and approaching the project as a luxury item," she says, which is exactly the treatment a high fashion doll like this one deserves. "The initial concepts for the packaging design were driven by the packaging team – both design and engineering – and then shared for feedback among the entire [Barbie Signature] team."

The result is a premium window box with a high-gloss finish, also in pink (of course!), with rose gold foil accents. A silk bow and a magnetic closure complete the elegant presentation.

Barbie Pink Collection Doll 2 is a Gold Label doll, available now for $125 in our online shop. There's a limit of three (3) per person while supplies last. If you missed out on the early years of Robert's previous collection – the historic and epic Barbie Fashion Model Collection – then you owe it to yourself to start fresh and add this pink prize to your collection today!

I am a fan of  Robert and love many of his dolls, even own some , he knows how to dress Barbie, but  this is a pass for me.   The dress is lovely but it feels like  they took a play line doll and drop her in it. I would love maybe  rooted eyelashes, for example, also the price is just way to high for this doll,  pass from me, but mild one

I love the shoes and hair style but dress and face isn’t quite matching up for me. Also for gold label price seems high on her. Had to take a pass.

Just got her. The price however… sheesh

I was really expecting either a nice white faux fur coat to match the gloves, or a nice silver clutch, additional dress.

The price of $125.00 + shipping… I just wanted… more.

I used my pre-Creations membership discount to buy this doll.  That brought the price tag down to something more reasonable (in my opinion).  I would have liked to see a silver clutch to go with her dress too, but not an additional dress.  She isn't a BarbieStyle Barbie.  😊

I used mine on Best to a Tea BFMC Barbie. Not all Silkstone Barbies came with one outfit. Grace Kelly came with two outfits in the Romance edition for example. Would have love to see more of something.

I love everything about this doll but the open mouth... the beautiful Robert Best sketch has a closed mouth... I'm not sure why it was changed or who's decision it was to deviate from the sketch, but its the only flaw (for me)... This face looks too play-line.... I still ordered her and happy for a high-end doll, but it's as shame because this doll was practically flawless in every other way... and the box designer deserves a raise! Flawless box creation.  I love the couture looking gown and pumps. The hair is beautiful in the photos'... it is also incorrect information since this is NOT!  the Karl face sculpt... but it should have been! She would have been flawless, a complete homerun.

She's gorgeous. My plan was to buy her when I saw her promo pic but $125...? I didn't buy doll 1 in this line because I didn't want to pay $100 for another Millie face (boring!). This doll was much more refreshing - beautiful skin tone, a brunette, and a pretty face...I was willing to pay $100 even though I thought that was a bit much for a doll with no articulation. So seeing her at $125 was beyond disappointing - probably gonna pass on her.

To me she just looks like a fashionista in a high quality, pretty dress. The doll itself is very underwhelming which is a shame. I feel like for the price you should be getting a unique face mold. Or at least rooted eyelashes or something like that to make it feel more premium.

What happened to all of the beautiful fantasy dolls? All the ones now are boring and look like they were created for children. The last one was the male mermaid which was less than stellar.

I agree the 2021 Barbie Pink Number 2 doll is boring and the price is too high at $125.  Personally, I would pass at half the price because the packaging and dress are just not interesting.  I have over 300 contemporary Barbies, most of them limited editions.  Like many collectors, I first and foremost buy what I like, but also have a pretty good track record for spotting which Barbies will hold value if not increase in value.  I am so disappointed that Mattel no longer produces the quantity and quality of choices for serious collectors.  I used to love getting Mattel's Barbie Collector catalog of a dozen or so fabulous limited edition choices (although I would have bought at least twice as many if they had just included photos of the packaging.  The thinking was that seeing Barbie in packaging somehow diminished her image.  That was a very poor marketing decision that I think seriously restricted sales).   Now, by the time I can check online for new releases, the very few I might have purchased are already sold out.

I track the values of Barbies in my collection by looking at prices of those sold at auction on ebay, and also consider the number of bidders over time.  I estimate my total collection could be sold today for about what I paid for it, which is fine with me.  About half are worth less than I paid for them, about twenty percent have increased in value, and the remaining thirty percent are still worth what I paid for them.

Im a relatively new collector and I missed out on the fashion model collection but those dolls were beautiful so I can see why alot of people are not so happy about this new collection. I think for me, and I know I keep saying saying this, the dolls themselves are what I'm finding underwhelming. I absolutely love the fashion, I think this dolls dress looks so high quality the first dolls dress was beautiful too but the actual dolls themselves are a little meh. They just look like playline dolls which is fine until you look at the price that these dolls are retailing for. It's a shame they didn't stylize the face sculpts more and do more with their hair. Even the newer holiday Barbie's over the past few years have had better defined hairstyles. Don't get me wrong I'm not expecting to see the same type of doll as the FMC but but I can't help but wish they were a little more then what they are.

Mine arrived today, and all I can say is that I can't believe she hasn't sold out yet.  She is gorgeous.  The box is beautifully crafted. The dress is stunning.  She looks like she belongs on the red carpet.  I'm much more pleased with this doll than Barbie Crystal Fantasy Collection Doll.  The only disappointing part of this doll are her shoes.  The heals are not straight and they easily fall off her feet.

I think she is beautiful, from top to bottom, I love her gorgeous multitone-brownish hair, here beautiful brown skin matches perfectly with that wonderful magenta dress. Her simple but effective make up with those beautiful eyelashes are so beautiful and "new face mold" Daya look like loos very good on her.

My favorite so far from the Pink collection ❤️
