It's time to celebrate another visionary, whose incredible contributions have helped shape and impact our culture. With the latest doll in our Barbie Tribute Collection, we're proudly honoring award-winning actress, producer, writer, and prominent LGBTQ+ advocate Laverne Cox.
Laverne is a four-time Emmy nominated actress, Emmy winning producer, and the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a scripted TV show. Laverne uses her voice to amplify the message of moving beyond societal expectations to live more authentically. Laverne embodies the values of the Tribute Collection, and we're thrilled to make her a part of it.
During our planning and design phases, the pandemic ruled out the possibility of in-person meetings, so we found different ways of collaborating. Video conferencing, email, and physical mail served to bridge the gap. We also sent doll body and skin tone samples to advance the design process.
For the fashion itself, the Barbie Signature team worked directly with Laverne to create an original design, a "triple-threat ensemble" to represent how she shines on the red carpet. The oxblood red faux leather corset is trimmed with satin ribbon on all the seams, and an oxblood red tulle dress drapes gracefully over the bodysuit. It’s designed to create multiple looks – the “triple threat” – by layering the pieces on and off.
Stunning silvery earrings and glittery high-heel boots complete her fashion, but there's so much to the look. For her hair, our team blended different blonde shades and lowlighted with different brown shades, to get to Laverne’s signature honey blonde with darker roots look. For her makeup, the team went with a classic smokey eye and nude lip that Laverne herself loves to wear.
