The Year of Friends Kicks off with a Barbie Bestie: Midge

By Mattel Creations Staff

Some friendships come and go with the seasons. Some friendships last for a few years. But true friendships stand the test of time.

The friendship between Barbie and Midge has lasted six decades and is still going strong. To celebrate their friend-iversary, we’ve created a Midge doll exclusively for Barbie Signature members.

Introduced in 1963, Midge was Barbie doll’s original best friend. “While Barbie was the teenage fashion model,” designer Bill Greening explains, “Midge was definitely the girl next door.”

Throughout the years, Midge went through a few changes. The Midge doll was originally marketed with three different hair colors – titan, blonde, and brunette. And just like Barbie, Midge soon had a boyfriend of her own, Allan Sherwood.

The Midge doll was discontinued in the late 1960s, but came back again in 1988, when the California Dream Midge doll was sold as a part of that beach-themed line. Later on, she was a part of the Happy Family line with Allan.

To create the 60th Anniversary Midge doll, we went back to the beginning. Just like her 1963 debut, this doll features a friendly, freckled face sculpt that compliments her titan hair with rolled bangs and bouncy curls. She wears her classic yellow and orange two-piece swimsuit with white heeled mules.

“Midge has five points of articulation and a ‘Genuine Midge’ wrist tag, just like the 1963 doll,” says Greening. “The big news is we are recreating her for the first time in the Silkstone body material.”

This Gold Label doll sale is open now for Barbie Signature members and she’s sure to sell out quickly. Get the 60th Anniversary Midge doll today and celebrate with this nostalgic tribute to an everlasting friendship.
