Off-Road Adventure: Matchbox ’65 Land Rover Gen II Safari!

By Gary Barnum

The Land Rover was designed to go global. Africa. Australia. The Middle East. The Far East. The rugged outdoor traveler even showed up at Matchbox in 1966, suitcases on roof, and eventually a safari rack. Tough like that deserves a break – with a new surfboard top! Now this superior   edition of the Land Rover Gen II Safari joins the new Matchbox Collectors line on October 14, 2021!

Not only would this beauty scream adventure stripped down, but tricked out? You’re clearly hittin’ the waves, dude. And from the terrain on the molded base, expect some gnarly tubes. Good thing you’ve got True Grip wheels with off-road tires to get you to the sand. Catch the waves on the environment-themed panoramic background, but never worry that this power piece will get you home and liven up your collection.

Hmmm. Not crazy about the color or tires on this one. So far out of the three offerings for MBX, the bus is my favorite. I passed on the Mercedes.  I will consider this one but not sure yet...

Agree on the tires.

What are people thinking when it comes to the tires on these things? Tan-coloured tires? Come on, those are hideous. It's like the designers are thinking, "We've got it 95% complete and it looks beautiful. Now let's throw on some tan-coloured tires because everyone loves tan-coloured tires, said no one ever."

Aside from color, deco, and tires, what's the difference between this one and a $1 basic model of same casting?https://matchbox.fandom.com/wiki/'65_Land_Rover_Gen_II_Safari

Is it the removeable surfboard and the case that is inflating this to $25?

Putting this into the $5 Collectors line is more reasonable. I really do not understand the difference between the $5 Collectors line and the $25 Mattel Creations Collectors releases.

Not a fan of collector cars that LOOK plastic. The tires carry a hint of translucency and definitely clash with the chrome wheels, and a white-plastic chassis completes the illusion delusion. That's a hard no from me, dawg.

Very nice! Matchbox is really stepping up to the plate. I like all the new exclusive models so far. Will definitely try to get this one too. Also thanks to everyone who's saying this is a "hard pass" for them. You not buying makes it THAT much easier for me to get one. Thank you for your collective service, dudes.

Meh. I know it says the body is zamac but I think that matte paint makes it look like a plastic body to me. Not a huge fan of the sand color tires either. Good luck to all who want one.

I completely agree. I see little to no difference between these and the 5 dollar superfast cars except the diorama base.

Makes you wonder, between the melted caramel base used on the Willys Jeep to these Tires.....sheesh? Looks like Butterscotch Life-Savers .................somebody at Mattel has as sweet tooth.

Cool! I was beginning to wonder what was taking so long with this one. I’m definitely going to cop one- but not expecting to see these sell out quickly. I can see why ppl are passing...a lot of valid ponts. Different strokes i guess. The deco is cool- I’m a fan of MBX and look forward to a photo shoot with this car!

Let’s just state the obvious here, those sandy/muddy looking wheels outfitted with perfectly chrome wheels look utterly mismatched. Shoulda painted the rims the same color as the wheels. Or just leave them unpainted. This would’ve actually been an instance where unpainted grey wheels would’ve looked better.

That said, I’ll still be trying for one. If we ever want to prove to the higher ups at Matchbox that there is an audience for high quality Matchbox releases with metal bases and decked out interiors, we gotta gobble these things up the same way we do RLC cars. Time to put our money where our mouth is!

White plastic ABS chassis??.. Painted metal body that looks like tan plastic??.. And another base??.. The sand colored tires combined with the tan interior and/or the tan painted body makes it too monochromatic for my taste. They should have given it standard black Real Rider tires to break up the monotony.

All for $25! .. Should have released this as a $6 Superfast. The only things I like are the chrome wheels & blue tinted windows!
