The King Of Rock ‘n’ Roll: Meet the Elvis Presley Barbie Doll!

By Ani Morgan

Elvis. Barbie. Two figures so iconic, theyre addressed by single names only and need no introduction at all. Put these legends together and a new kind of superstar is bornone you trulycant help falling in lovewith! The Barbie Signature Elvis Presley Barbie Doll celebrates Elvislarger-than-life legacy in a thoroughly refreshing way – with Barbie® herself personifying the spirit of Elvis.

Elvis dolls are not new to Mattel. From Barbie Loves Elvis to a set featuring Elvis and Priscilla Presley on their wedding day, the King of Rock 'n' Roll has long graced collector shelves in Ken doll form. Now, twenty years after Mattels original rendition of Elvis Presley in the Eagle Jumpsuit, Barbie takes the spotlight in her own version of the same legendary look.

One reason why we did Barbie doll as Elvis was thecoolnessfactor of a female in more masculine clothing,” designer Linda Kyaw-Merschon explains. “Its very empowering and quite reflective of the times.”

Like the original stage ensemble, Barbie dolls bell-bottomed jumpsuit is embellished with sparkling eagles in red, gold, and blue and includes an attached cape and scarf. Inspired by Elvissignature accessories, she also wears white pointy-toed boots and aturquoisering. Completing the iconic look is a sleek pompadour ponytaila nod to Elvistrademark hairstyle, but with a very Barbie twist.

Merging two iconic figures into one poses challenges, to be sure. “When working on such a high profile, well-known and beloved person, the challenge is making sure you are doing it the justice that it deserves,” says Linda. “Every stitch, every color, every possibility has been thoughtfully worked through by the entire talented team.”

Those challenges are well worth the gorgeous end results. “There is nothing like taking two things you love and merging them for the ultimate historical moment,” Linda continues. “Both are icons in their own right, so it's always exciting to see how the combination will play out. As you can see, this one is quite memorable!”

When it came to selecting which show-stopping look Barbie would bring to life, the choice was clear. “We looked for some of the most heroic pieces in Elvis' wardrobe,” Linda says. “He had great, impeccable, and unique style. We had already done the gold lamé outfit on Barbie doll years ago, and the remarkable 'American Eagle' jumpsuit was the next obvious choice. My favorite element is the eagle icon in the back, of course!”

Elvis Presley Barbie Doll makes her timely debut during Elvis Week and retails for $50. This Gold Label stunner will have a two per person purchase limit, while supplies last. (This limit is subject to change at a later date.)

Elvis and Barbie fans alike will delight in this magnificent fusion of two genuine icons, so if you want to add her to your collection, dont wait. As Elvis himself once beautifully crooned, “Its now or never!”

I think the text on the box sends the wrong message. Elvis Presley written on the box with a female character (Barbie) inside the box sends the wrong message... as if Elvis Presley was a female.  The box should clearly state; "Barbie as Elvis Presley". That would be appropriate and acceptable.

I too was surprised when I opened the email and saw Barbie dressed as Elvis.  I was excited to purchase an Elvis KEN doll.  I can appreciate Barbie as Elvis, but it was not what I expected and a doll I most likely will not add to my Elvis collection.

Yes she looks cute but I was looking for a Ken so I could buy it for my mother who loves Elvis. What were they thinking* Barbie celebrates Elvis maybe but then why not put that out Jan 8th for his birthday* Smh no Mattel, this one was not thought out so well. I mean even if she were doing drag king she wouldn't have her hair long and hanging. Sorry I will not be purchasing this doll even though the outfit is rocking.

It seems lately Mattel is running out of original ideas. "Reproduction" dolls, newer versions of other dolls (I Love Lucy, Elvis (remember Barbie in the gold lame tuxedo?), to name a few. I want to use my Member rewards, but sadly, am hard pressed to find something I really want.

I love this doll and I especially love the design of the box. Since Barbie has already made all the different Ken doll versions of Elvis in the past, I think this is great in a Barbie version. I am going to put her right next to my Elton John Barbie. Thanks!

As long as she is a Gold label. She’s alright with me. I just made my purchase, we haven’t had a Gold label or a Silver label in a while. These are true collectors over the black labels.

It’s a really cool idea. But, I feel that these new dolls lack the attention of detail. Her make up could have been different, there could have been more drama with the outfit. Mattel is really cutting corners with these new dolls.

Lucy now Elvis. I am a bit older than barbie and even I struggle to find relevance today for these two. Surely we have more recent icons but the licensing fee was too high no doubt.!! Ken as Elvis and Barbie as his beautiful Ann Margaret if anything. Really waiting for something befitting the gold label that will remain a treasured possession like the Bob Mackie extravaganza or some of the modern designers from New Orleans conventions etc..truly stunning. Give us something to worship.

She is cute!

Someone said that this should say Barbie as Elvis, this is for collectors and there is no need to say that. I have Elvis, Elton John, and David Bowie and love the idea that this is an adult version and there needs no explanation.  Keep putting out any and all Musicians, Artists and inspirational people in history. Would like to see all different national figures too. Thank you.

Women have been impersonating Elvis since 1956! Allis Lesley was pictured with Elvis in 1956, she was known as the female Elvis Presley! There were others too, including Britney Spears who also wore the the American Eagle type of suit known from Elvis wearing the original Eagle suit in the worldwide satellite concert 'ELVIS Aloha From Hawaii' (1973) to benefit Kui Lee Cancer Foundation. We also know Elvis never needed anyone to sell his iconic legendary image. What we have here is Mattell seeking help from Elvis to save their dying industry. He saved Vegas as he did movie production companies. No need to get upset that it's Barbie dressed as Elvis since we know many women & girls would love to be like Elvis Presley! ELVIS is for both male & female!! Not only in old way of thinking either! Elvis loved strong women from his girlfriend Wanda Jackson who toured with him & the Louisiana Hayride in 1955. Elvis told her to sing to new music (she sang country) so Wanda sang Rockabilly & became the Queen of Rockabilly! (get Wanda a Barbie fill honoring her) Elvis & Wanda are the true King & Queen of Rock! Other women he loved include Ann-Margret, also known as the female Elvis Presley!! Mattell ya got a lot of researching to do but ask any seasoned Elvis fan and we can help you!!

I feel like another Elvis Barbie is a bit reductive. Especially since there were a few tributes to Elvis already (Barbie Loves Elvis in 1996 and Barbie as Elvis Gold in  2011).

The hairdo would have better been utilized to release a tribute Amy Winehouse Silkstone Barbie vs. yet another Barbie as Elvis. Or a tribute to Prince maybe? I mean, Barbie was Elton John, Elvis Presley, David Bowie… It would be nice to see Vintage Christy as Prince.

Barbie as an Elvis tribute, turned out fantastic, if they weren't so expensive I'd get my daughter one!

A Dolly Parton as Ken though is off-putting and should be stricken from record.

🤢I think this is in such poor taste.  Elvis wasnt a female. This does  not do Elvis justice at all.   Dont put him on a woman at least make an Elvis look alike doll which would be accepted by Elvis fans.  I cant believe that this doll was approved by EPE Enterprises.

This doll isn't claiming to be Elvis or changing Elvis' gender. Have you not seen the Elton John or David Bowie Barbies? They're clearly meant to be Barbie in the **style** of the artists 🤦‍♀️ Also unless you saw the licensing agreement, maybe Mattel only bought access to his likeness in terms of style or that particular look and not to his face or body as a Ken.
